This morning I preached the following sermon at Massabah Church-Bacolod City:
(I John 1)
I. Christian Fellowship Involves COMPANIONSHIP (vv. 1-4)
A. Companionship is BASED on REALITY (vv. 1-2)
1) Eternal Reality – “That which was from the beginning … the word of life.” (v.1)
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities–all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
2) Historical Reality – “The life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it” (v. 2)
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.
3) Experiential Reality – “was made manifest to us” (v.2)
And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
B. Companionship BRINGS JOY (vv. 3-4)
1) Freely-shared joy – “that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us” (v. 3a)
And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not you? For you are our glory and joy.
2) Filial joy – “and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.” (v. 3b)
Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
3) Full joy – “And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.” (v. 4)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
II. Christian Fellowship Involves CLEANSING (vv. 5-10)
but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. (Psa 51:12)
A. INTEGRITY in the way we WALK – “walk in the light, as he is in the light” (v. 7)
but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous.
You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits. “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
B. TRANSPARENCY in the way we TALK – “If we confess our sins” (v. 9)
Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.
I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah.
“Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.
1. Christian fellowship is about joyful Companionship in the being of Christ.
2. Christian fellowship is about righteous Cleansing through the blood of Christ
