Here’s the outline of the devotional I shared a while ago with the Men’s group of Ikthus East church, Bacolod City. It’s part of the series of Bible studies I’m doing on 1st John, particularly the three stages of the Christian life. Be blessed!
1 John 2:12-14 KJV
I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake. I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father. I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
Young men, by virtue of their youth and strength, are called to do spiritual battle. Children are just beginning to “walk”. Fathers are in a better position to mentor the young by reason of their maturity and experience, but they are entitled to a generous amount of rest and should not be expected to labor as hard as before. Rather, they are called to deepen their intimacy with God now that their busier days are over. But as for young men, here’s what they’re called to do.
1. Young men are to be strong in the Lord.
Ephesians 6:10 KJV
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
Isaiah 40:31 KJV
But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
2. Young men should do battle (spiritual warfare) for the Lord.
1 Timothy 6:12 KJV
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
Ephesians 6:12 KJV
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places .
3. Young men should fight using God’s word.
Ephesians 6:17 KJV
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
Hebrews 4:12 KJV
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Psalm 119:11 KJV
Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
4. Young men should find strength through prayer.
Matthew 6:13 KJV
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Are you fighting the good fight of faith? Are you depending on the Lord for strength? Do you hide God’s Word in your heart? Do you pray for strength?
Lord, help us to be strong in you and to fight the good fight of faith. Amen.
