Anointed by the Holy One

(A devotional given to the Men’s group of Ikthus East Bacolod.)

TEXT: 1 John 2:18-26

INTRODUCTION:

The apostle John wants us to distinguish between those who are truly God’s children and those who aren’t. At the same time he wants to protect us from false teachers. God’s children have received an anointing from the Holy Spirit: spiritual discernment. They are able to taste and see spiritual truth.

John 3:3 ESV

[3] Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

1 Corinthians 2:12,14 ESV

[12] Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. [14] The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.

1. THE ANOINTING HELPS US TO RECOGNIZE THE TRUTH (verses 20, 21, 27)

Matthew 11:25-26 ESV

[25] At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; [26] yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.

Matthew 16:15-17 ESV

[15] He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” [16] Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” [17] And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.

Proverbs 1:23 ESV

[23] If you turn at my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit to you; I will make my words known to you.

John 14:26 ESV

[26] But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

John 16:13 ESV

[13] When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

2. THE ANOINTING HELPS US TO RESIST THE LIES OF THE ANTI-CHRISTS (verses 18, 19, 22, 23)

A) They deny Christ’s divinity and therefore his power to save.

Mark 2:5-7 ESV

[5] And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” [6] Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, [7] “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

Matthew 1:21-23 ESV

[21] She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” [22] All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: [23] “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).

B) They deny Christ’s sufficiency.

Galatians 5:2-4 ESV

[2] Look: I, Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you. [3] I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law. [4] You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace.

Hebrews 7:25 ESV

[25] Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

3. THE ANOINTING HELPS US TO REMAIN IN THE TRUTH (verse 27)

Isaiah 30:20-21 ESV

[20] And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself anymore, but your eyes shall see your Teacher. [21] And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.

CONCLUSION: WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR REMAINING IN THE TRUTH.

Abide in Christ by letting what you heard from the beginning abide in you (verses 24, 25 & 27)

2 Timothy 3:14-15 ESV

[14] But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it [15] and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

Hebrews 3:14-15 ESV

[14] For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. [15] As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
