For me to live is Christ

TEXT:

Philippians 1:19-30

INTRODUCTION:

Probably the most important question in life is: What is the meaning of my life? How should I live my life? Paul answers this question in a very straightforward manner: To live is Christ. And why not? After all, he gave his life for us!

2 Corinthians 5:15 ESV
[15] and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

Philippians 1:20
as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death.

I. LIVE TO HONOR CHRIST

“My body will be the theatre in which Christ’s glory is displayed.” (Ellicot)

A) BY NOT BEING AFRAID TO DIE

The way we face death when it comes for us someday testifies to the genuineness of our faith and how precious we deem Christ is to us.

Philippians 1:21
For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

Philippians 1:23
I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better.

Psalms 23:4
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

“Death is a great loss to a carnal worldly man; but to a good Christian it is gain. It delivers him from all the evils of life, and brings him to the possession of the chief good.” (Matthew Henry)

B) BY SERVING CHRIST’S PEOPLE

Philippians 1:24-25
But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith,

Colossians 1:28
Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.

We should be perfecting one another’s faith. Iron sharpens iron.

II. LIVE TO PROMOTE THE GOSPEL

We should live our lives in a way that prioritizes the gospel, i.e., the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ.

Philippians 1:27
Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel,

A) BY STRIVING TOGETHER FOR THE GOSPEL.

We should cooperate with one another and contribute our share in advancing the gospel. We can do this by (1) sharing the gospel and (2) supporting the gospel.

1 Thessalonians 1:8
For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything.

Philippians 4:14-16
Yet it was kind of you to share my trouble. And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only. Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again.

B) BY BEING READY TO SUFFER FOR THE GOSPEL

Philippians 1:29
For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake,

Mark 10:29-30
Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life.

APPLICATION:

  1. Think of a specific way you can honor Christ in your life.
  2. Think of a specific way you can promote the gospel.

PRAYER:

Lord, help us to live to honor you and to promote your gospel. Amen.
